Veneers
Is this right for me? Veneers are different from Dental Crowns which encase an entire tooth whereas porcelain veneers only cover the front of a tooth. Therefore veneering removes less of the original tooth material than a crown. Veneers may not be suitable for you if; you have unhealthy or weak teeth, do not have enough tooth enamel or if you grind your teeth. Porcelain Veneers look just like real teeth because they are translucent. This means that when they are bonded on to a tooth's surface, they mimic the light-handling characteristics of enamel. Another major advantage of Veneers is that the porcelain they are made from is not susceptible to staining. The use of Veneers will depend on a large number of factors that can only be assessed by our dentist when you come for a consultation. The Risks However, the process is irreversible and it is possible that a Veneer may break off and need to be replaced. As with many dental treatments the long term success of any Veneer is dependant on the strength of the tooth itself, the way you treat your teeth and overall oral health. What is involved? The first stage of the veneering procedure may involve removing a tiny amount of the tooth surface to ensure that the new tooth covering looks natural and does not feel intrusive or uncomfortable. Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression is taken to make sure that the veneers fit exactly to the teeth. These first two steps are done on your first visit to the dentist. After approximately a week the veneers created in the dental laboratory will be ready for fitting. This process will involve checking your bite, the colour and making small adjustments. This will require you to fill out a form prior to entering the treatment room. Make sure that you do not have any important appointments directly after dental work that might require anaesthetic. Even if you have not had an anaesthetic, changes in your can feel strange and it is possible that a change might temporarily affect your speech. Some treatments may require you to eat very carefully for a short period after your visit and this may be worth remembering this when planning your day.
Even small changes to your teeth may initially feel strange or even unpleasant. Give your mouth and tongue a chance to get used to any new features in you mouth. If after 48 hours you are still uncertain about any aspect of your treatment please call the clinic.
However, the working life of a veneer will ultimately be dependant on the nature of your bite, your oral hygiene, your eating habits and the general strength of your teeth. |
