Overview
PIXEL – FRACTIONAL LASER SKIN RESURFACING
Launched in the U.S.A. in April 2006, the Pixel 2940 laser device from Alma Lasers uses a fractional ablative technology for skin resurfacing. With the proven effectiveness of an ablative approach combined with the patient comfort level and convenience of a non-ablative approach, this treatment is designed to improve the quality and the texture of the skin while it stimulates collagen regeneration.
Is this right for me?
This treatment is particularly good for patients who suffer with acne and trauma scars, ageing and photo damaged skin. It is a very good treatment for patients who are suffering with collagen and elastin loss caused by sun exposure, excessive alcohol and poor diet.
What results can I expect?
The results will start to show after approximately 10-14 days following the first treatment and then will steadily improve over the months with repeated treatments. The new epidermal skin will start to develop immediately. The skin will have a slight bronze appearance for 2-14 days depending on the level of treatment.
What is involved?
The laser beam is delivered to the skin through a micro optics lens. This creates 7x7 or 9x9 pixel sized ablation dots on the skin which penetrate between 20-50 microns deep into the skin. The laser energy heats water within the surface layers of the skin, causing both the water and the tissue of the skin to turn to vapour. Every time the laser passes over the skin, some of the outermost layers of the skin are removed in a precise and controlled way until the appropriate depth has been reached.
The laser creates an ablative and thermal effect at the pixel area – a micro-injury – without disturbing the surrounding tissue. The micro-injured areas then start a healing process. This causes collagen remodelling, skin tightening and the skin texture improves as the skin heals. Treatments can last anything from 10mins up to 1 hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. Treatment programmes of 3-5 treatments, 1-4 weeks apart is normally recommended, depending on the individual patient undergoing treatment. Your practitioner will be able to create an appropriate treatment plan for you.
What are the benefits?
The Pixel is used for the treatment known as Skin Rejuvenation, which includes the reduction and possible removal of fine lines and wrinkles. An improvement will be seen on deeper wrinkles, the reduction of age spots, blemishes, acne scars and hyper pigmentation. This treatment will also help to repair sun damaged skin.
Pixel can be used to treat most areas including – face, neck, chest, back, arms, hands and feet.
What are the risks?
The Pixel treatment is considered to be well tolerated and almost pain free, with a feeling of mild sunburn for about an hour, then virtually no discomfort. The treatment of deeper wrinkles and scars may produce more discomfort and heat effect, but your practitioner will have a cooling device at hand to ease any discomfort felt.
Some skins if sensitive may get a histamine response, small bumps, which will settle, and swelling (mild), which will resolve in 2-3 days.
Pixel is not suitable or safe for use on all skin types, and therefore cannot be used on those individuals with Fitzpatrick skin type V1, i.e., very dark skin tones such as Afro-Caribbean and African black skin.
Aftercare
Immediately following treatment the skin may feel tight and smooth, with some redness. As the days follow there will be flaking to the area treated. Your skin will naturally and vigorously exfoliate as the epidermal skin replaces the dead tissue.
Your practitioner will apply a post treatment balm to the area to reduce redness, which should resolve in 24-48 hours, depending on skin sensitivity. A sunscreen SPF30 must be used to protect skin from sun exposure.
How long will the results last?
Skin resurfacing with Pixel is a gradual process which happens over several treatments, depending on the severity of acne scarring, other scarring or lines and wrinkles. We would recommend a course once a year and the results will last at least 12 months for a permanent reduction of acne scarring. For fine lines and wrinkles the results will last at least 12 months but as we cannot slow down the aging process a course of pixel once a year would be recommended for maximum results.
