Skin Pigmentation Treatments

Overview
IPL is a non-surgical procedure for treating, pigmented lesions and age spots.

IPL is suitable for all skin types and the process is ideal for patients with active lifestyles because it requires no downtime and has a low risk of side effects.

Is this right for me?
This treatment is particularly good for patients who have pigmented lesions caused through sunlight, the elements and the natural ageing process which all contribute to the development of dark spots. Your face, hands and chest are the first parts of the body to show signs of ageing because they receive so much sun exposure.

What results can I expect?
When having IPL skin treatments patients are very pleased with the results because the process treats the full face, neck, chest or hands rather than addressing a single isolated area or imperfection. Patients see dramatic results within a very short space of time and the pigmented lesions become lighter in colour.

What is involved?
You will have a thorough consultation with a Nurse or one of our Medical Aestheticians and this will enable us to assess the area being treated. If you are suitable for treatment we will patch test you on The Harmony IPL System. IPL destroys unsightly pigmented lesions by sending short pulses of light into the skin. The pigmented lesions fade after each treatment and the procedure is quick leading to removal within a course of 3-6 treatments.

What are the benefits?
In addition to effectively treating the chosen area, the procedure is gentle, non-invasive and safe requiring no downtime. In fact many people even schedule their sessions during their lunch breaks. Additionally, IPL treatments are customised to each individual’s specific skin type and condition, providing the best possible results.

What are the risks?
Age spots and pigmented lesions are a real problem for many people. IPL is widely regarded as a safe and effective form of treatment that may also help to improve the texture although there are minimal risks which could occur which is hyper pigmentation, hypo pigmentation, purpura, scarring and mild blistering.

Aftercare
Immediately after the procedure the pigmentation may appear darker than before.  This is normal and after a treatment aloe vera gel will be applied to soothe the area as the skin may become pink and feel sore. Some patients have described it as feeling like mild sunburn, but this is a reaction that usually disappears within a day or so.

How long will the results last?
Treatment success varies from person to person and relies upon careful patient selection, agreeing realistic expectations and client compliance.

A course of 6 treatments every 2-3 weeks is normally recommended. Occasionally we find that some patients require more than 6 treatments and an infrequent top-up once the initial course is complete.
