Is it right for me?
A Rhinoplasty is one of
the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. It can reduce or increase the
size of your nose, change the shape of the tip of the nose, narrow the nostrils,
change the angle between your nose and upper lip. It may also correct a birth
defect or injury, and help relieve some breathing problems. When this procedure
is performed complications are uncommon and usually minor. However, there is
always a possibility of complications, including infection, nosebleed, or a
reaction to the anaesthetic. You can reduce risks by following the surgeon's
instructions both before and after surgery. The
Risks
Complications are infrequent and usually
minor. However, there is always a possibility of complications, including
infection or a reaction to the anaesthetic. In about one case out of ten, a
second procedure may be required; such cases are infrequent and happen to
patients of the most skilled surgeons. Any corrective surgery is usually minor.
But you can reduce risks by closely following our surgeon's instructions. The
majority of people do not experience these complications; you should discuss
each of them with our surgeon to make sure you understand the risks and
consequences of a Rhinoplasty. Because of these complications, it is important
that you complete the health questionnaire which will be given to you on your
arrival at nu-age medical spa. Previous nasal surgery may preclude Nose
Reshaping.
What is involved?
At your consultation, the
surgeon will evaluate your health and discuss your expectations in detail. At
your initial consultation, the surgeon will ask how you would like your nose to
look. He / she will evaluate the structure of your nose and face, and discuss
possibilities with you. The surgeon will also explain any factors that can
influence the procedure and the results. These factors include the structure of
your nasal bones and cartilage, shape of your face, thickness of your skin, your
age and your expectations. It is important that you tell the surgeon if you've
had any previous nose surgery or an injury to your nose, even if it was a long
time ago or if you have any allergies or breathing difficulties.
There are
two ways in which a Rhinoplasty can be performed; open and closed. When a
closed operation is performed there is no visible scarring as it is performed
from inside the nose. When an open technique is used, or when the procedure
calls for the narrowing of flared nostrils, there are small scars on the base of
the nose which are usually not visible. The surgeon will separate the skin of
the nose from the bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired
shape. Once the surgery is complete, a splint will be applied to provide support
and help maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints also may be
placed in your nostrils. Please tell our surgeon if you smoke, take any
medication, vitamins, or other drugs. Our surgeon will also explain what
anaesthetic will be used and where the surgery is to be performed. It is very
important that you tell the surgeon what your expectations are and he / she will
inform you of alternatives and any risks and limitations. Once you have been
fully informed you can decide with the surgeon the best possible options for
you.
Preparing for surgery
Our surgeon or
nurse will give you advice on how to prepare yourself for surgery. This will
include guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain
vitamins and medications. You will be asked to sign consent forms to make sure
that you understand the procedure, risks and potential complications of your
surgery. There will be a waiting period of at least two weeks from the time of
your consultation to the day of your surgery. We will arrange for you to be
driven home after surgery, but you may need help for a day or two after the
operation.
After your surgery
With this
type of surgery the bruising and swelling can be quite apparent and in the days
following surgery, when your face is bruised and swollen, it's easy to forget
that you will improve. Many patients can feel quite down for a while after
surgery, this is quite normal and understandable but rest assured that this
stage will pass. Each day, your nose will begin to look better and your spirits
will improve. Within a week or two, you'll no longer look as if you've just had
surgery. Initially you will be likely to have some pain and discomfort which can
be controlled with medication. Bruising and swelling varies from person to
person and usually reaches its peak during the first week, but can last from two
weeks to a month. You should be able to return to work within a week to ten
days, depending on the level of activity required for your job.
How long will the results last?
The results should be
permanent unless you suffer an injury to the nose. Healing is a slow and gradual
process. Some subtle swelling may be present for months, especially in the tip,
so the final results may not be apparent for a year. You are more likely to be
happy with your surgery if you are fully informed, understand the procedure
thoroughly and your expectations are realistic.
