Is it right for me?
Liposuction is a procedure
that improves body shape by removing localised pockets of fat from areas of the
body that have been resistant to diet and exercise. This procedure is not a
substitute for diet and exercise or designed to treat obesity. Common locations
for Liposuction are abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs and knees. Ideally you would
be normal weight with firm, elastic skin. You should be physically healthy, your
age is not a major consideration; but, older patients may have less elasticity
in their skin and may not achieve the same results as someone with tighter skin.
Liposuction carries a risk for individuals who have medical problems such as
diabetes, heart or lung disease, poor circulation, or if they have recently had
surgery near the area to be treated.
The Risks
Fortunately complications are few
and far between, however anyone having any type of surgery should be aware of
both the benefits and the risks. Our surgeon will discuss all of these in detail
at your consultation. Initially you will be likely to have some pain and
discomfort which can be controlled with analgesia. You can expect swelling and
bruising. You may also find that the areas may look uneven and feel lumpy. Other
risks associated with surgery are haematomas, nerve damage, infection and
scarring. There are certain medical conditions that can increase the likelihood
of any complications which is why it is important that you complete the health
questionnaire which will be given to you on your arrival at nu-age medical spa.
There is a higher risk of infection in the first two weeks following surgery;
any risk can be reduced by following our surgeons advice before and after
surgery. As with any type of surgery, bleeding can cause some swelling and pain,
this can be controlled with analgesia. Fortunately severe complications are
rare, however anyone having any type of surgery should be aware of both the
benefits and the risks. Our surgeon will discuss all of these in detail at your
consultation. There are certain medical conditions that can increase the
likelihood of any complications which is why it is important that you complete
the health questionnaire which will be given to you on your arrival at nu-age
medical spa. Previous surgery may preclude Liposuction.
What is involved?
At your consultation, the surgeon
will evaluate your health and discuss your expectations in detail. The surgeon
will make a small inconspicuous incision where the area of fat is to be removed.
A cannula (surgical hollow tube) is inserted, attached to a suction tube, and
the unwanted fat is then removed by suction. The incision site may be closed
with a stitch. Liposuction can be carried out under local and general
anaesthetic and either as a day case or overnight stay depending on how many
areas are treated at one time. Please tell our surgeon if you smoke, take any
medication, vitamins, or other drugs. Our surgeon will also explain what
anaesthetic will be used and where the surgery is to be performed. It is very
important that you tell the surgeon what your expectations are and he / she will
inform you of alternatives and any risks and limitations. Once you have been
fully informed you can decide with the surgeon the best possible options for
you. Preparing for surgery Our surgeon or nurse will give you advice on how to
prepare yourself for surgery, this will include guidelines on eating and
drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. There
will be a waiting period of at least two weeks from the time of your
consultation to the day of your surgery. We will arrange for you to be driven
home after surgery, but you may need help at home for a day or two after the
operation.
After your surgery
Initially you will be
likely to have some pain and discomfort which can be controlled with analgesia;
you will need to wear a pressure garment as directed by the surgeon. The
bruising and swelling will take a few weeks to subside and your stitches will
come out in one week to 14 days. Follow the surgeon's advice on when to begin
exercising again and return to normal activities. You may find your abdomen will
be sensitive to touch due to the bruising for a week or so, therefore it would
be better to avoid physical contact until you feel more comfortable, usually
four to six weeks after surgery. You should be able to return to work within a
week to ten days, depending on the level of activity required for your job.
How long will the results last?
This is
difficult to predict, as it depends mainly on weight control and regular
exercise. Any future weight gain will tend to go to areas that have not had
Liposuction and where the original fat cells remain which can then make your
body shape look out of proportion. You are more likely to be happy with your
surgery if you are fully informed, understand the procedure thoroughly and your
expectations are realistic.
