Is it right for me?
This procedure can enhance
your appearance and your selfconfidence by making you look younger and fresher.
As we age gravity, sun damage and the stress of daily life can be seen in our
faces. We often develop deep creases from the nose to the mouth and our jaw line
tends to lose definition because the skin becomes slack. Folds and fat deposits
can appear on our necks making us look jowly. A Facelift (Rhytidectomy) cannot
stop us ageing but it can turn back the clock by removing the excess fat,
tightening muscles, and removing the excess skin. This procedure can be done
alone or with other procedures such as a brow lift and upper and lower eyelid
surgery. Some medical conditions can make this type of surgery more risky. These
include thyroid problems, dry eye syndrome, high blood pressure, circulatory
disorders, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. A detached retina or glaucoma
is also reason for caution; check with your ophthalmologist before you have
surgery.
The Risks
During your
consultation our surgeon will evaluate your face, checking skin and your
underlying bone structure. The surgeon will also check for medical conditions
that could cause problems during or after surgery, such as uncontrolled high
blood pressure, blood clotting problems. Be sure to tell our surgeon if you
smoke or are taking any drugs or medications, especially aspirin or other drugs
that affect clotting. Some problems that can occur include haematoma and injury
to the nerves that control facial muscles but this is usually temporary. Poor
healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. Complications are
infrequent and usually minor. However, as with any surgery; there is always a
possibility of complications or a reaction to the anaesthetic. You can reduce
your risks by closely following the surgeon's instructions both before and after
surgery. Because of these potential complications, it is important that you
complete the health questionnaire which will be given to you on your arrival at
nu-age medical spa. Previous facial surgery may preclude a Facelift.
What is Involved?
At your consultation the surgeon
will evaluate your health and discuss your expectations in detail. A Facelift
usually takes several hours and longer if you're having more than one procedure
done. For extensive procedures, some surgeons may schedule two separate
sessions. Every surgeon approaches the procedure in his or her own way. Some
complete one side of the face at a time, and others move back and forth between
the sides. Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples and go down
the natural line in front of the ear, and then continue behind the ear along the
edge of the hairline. A small incision may also be made under the chin. The
exact position of the incisions depends on your facial structure and our
surgeon's technique. The surgeon first separates the skin from the fat and
muscle. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from the neck and chin to improve the
contour of the face and jaw line. The surgeon then tightens the muscles, and
removes the excess skin. Please tell the surgeon if you smoke, take any
medication, vitamins, or other drugs. Our surgeon will also explain what
anaesthetic will be used and where the surgery is to be performed. It is very
important that you tell the surgeon what your expectations are and he / she will
inform you of alternatives and any risks and limitations. Once you have been
fully informed you can decide with the surgeon the best possible options for
you.
Preparing for Surgery
Our surgeon or
nurse will give you advice on how to prepare yourself for surgery, this will
include guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain
vitamins and medications. You will be asked to sign consent forms to make sure
that you understand the procedure, and any risks and potential complications of
your surgery.
There will be a waiting period of at least two weeks from
the time of your consultation to the day of your surgery. We will arrange for
you to be driven home after your surgery, but you may need help at home for a
day or two after the operation.
After Surgery
Initially your face may look and feel rather strange. You may be
surprised at how bruised and swollen you are. Just keep in mind that in a few
weeks you'll be looking normal. Your facial movements may be a little stiff and
you might feel a little self-conscious. Bruising can persist for two or three
weeks, and you may get tired easily. Some patients can feel disappointed and
depressed at first. The stitches will be removed between 7 to 14 days after
surgery. Once they're out, and the swelling and bruising gradually subsides,
you'll start to look and feel much better. Any pain or discomfort can be
controlled with medication. You should be able to return to work within a week
to ten days, depending on the level of activity required for your job. Your
scars will be quite pink for at least six weeks and you may also be told to
avoid alcohol as it causes fluid retention. Men may find they have to shave
behind the neck and ears, where areas of beard growing skin have been
repositioned.
How long will the results last?
No surgery will stop the ageing process and a Facelift doesn't stop
the clock but you can turn back time. The results can last for many years, and
you should look younger and feel more refreshed. You are more likely to be happy
with your surgery if you are fully informed, understand the procedure thoroughly
and your expectations are realistic.
