Is it right for me? Ear Adjustment (Otoplasty), is usually done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or reduce the size of large ears. This type of surgery is for anyone who lacks confidence or has low self-esteem due to protruding ears. This lack of confidence is usually caused by an accumulation of factors that include being teased or ridiculed in the past. This is often endorsed by being self-conscious in social situations where their protruding ears may be accentuated. Risks An Otoplasty is a fairly simple operation. However, as with any surgery; there is always a possibility of complications or a reaction to the anaesthetic. There is always a risk of infection in the first two weeks following surgery but this risk can be dramatically reduced by following the surgeons advice before and after surgery. Complications can include infection, bleeding, poor or lumpy scars, asymmetry, numbness and cold intolerance. As with any type of surgery, bleeding can cause some swelling and pain, this can be controlled with medication. The majority of people do not experience complications but you should discuss them with our surgeon to make sure you understand the risks and consequences of your surgery. There are certain medical conditions that can increase the likelihood of any complications which is why it is important that you complete the health questionnaire which will be given to you on your arrival at nu-age medical spa. Previous ear surgery may preclude Ear Adjustment. What is Involved? At your consultation, the surgeon will evaluate your health and discuss your expectations in detail. This procedure can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic. The surgeon will make a small incision in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage which will then be reshaped. Initially your head will be wrapped in a quite bulky bandage or head garment for protection and comfort. The ears may throb or ache for a few days, but this can be relieved by medication. After approximately seven days these bandages will be changed for a lighter bandage. It is important you follow the surgeon's instructions for wearing this dressing, especially at night. Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about a week. Any activity which may involve the ear being bent should be avoided for a month or so. Please tell our surgeon if you smoke, take any medication, vitamins, or other drugs. Our surgeon will also explain what anaesthetic will be used and where the surgery is to be performed. It is very important that you tell the surgeon what your expectations are and he / she will inform you of alternatives and any risks and limitations. Once you have been fully informed you can decide with the surgeon the best possible options for you. Preparing for your surgery Our surgeon or nurse will give you advice on how to prepare yourself for surgery, this will include guidelines on eating and drinking, smoking, taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. There will be waiting period of at least two weeks from the time of your consultation to the day of your surgery. We will arrange for you to be driven home after your surgery, but you may need help at home for a day or two after the operation. After your surgery Initially you will be likely to have some pain and discomfort which can be controlled with medication. You will also need to wear a headband as directed by the surgeon. You may experience discomfort for a couple of weeks, but this will subside as will the bruising and swelling. Your stitches will come out or dissolve in one week to 14 days. Follow our surgeon's advice regarding when to begin exercising again and return to normal activities. You should be able to return to work within a week to ten days, depending on the level of activity required for your job. This type of surgery can be done under local or general anaesthetic and usually as a day case. How long will the results last? Most patients are usually thrilled with the results of ear surgery. However, it is important to remember that the goal is improvement and not always perfection. So don't expect both ears to match perfectly because no ones ears are symmetrical. You are more likely to be happy with your surgery if you are fully informed, understand the procedure thoroughly and your expectations are realistic. |
